Reflexology is a healing art that has been used for several thousands of years and is known to have been practised in India, China and Ancient Egypt. It is a safe, holistic, non-invasive therapy which works on the mind, body and spirit, gently encouraging the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.

How does Reflexology work?  

It is based on the theory that different reflexes on the feet, lower legs, hands, face or ears correspond to different areas of the body.  By applying pressure to the reflexes, the whole body can be treated, promoting a feeling of well-being. I work on the feet or hands rather than the other areas. 

What to expect from a Reflexology treatment

Reflexology is a very individual treatment which is tailored to you as a whole person, taking into account both physical and non-physical factors that might be affecting your wellbeing. In the initial consultation, I need to take a detailed medical history, before giving a treatment, which is given whilst you are reclining and your feet need to be bare.

Treatment sessions last about three-quarters of an hour – the initial consultation takes about 75 minutes. The number of treatment sessions you will need will depend on why you are having reflexology. It is recommended that you have between 4 and 6 at first.

Many people think that reflexology is ticklish but the type of pressure used on the reflexes can be changed so that it isn’t.  

Some people find it works for them – some don’t. The best way to find out is to try it!     

The History of Reflexology

Reflexology was introduced to the West by Dr. William Fitzgerald who discovered that when he applied pressure to certain bony prominences such as the joints of the fingers, or the mucosal margin inside the nose, he could produce numbness in another part of the body. In other words the pressure had a reflex response.

He further discovered that parts of the body which had such a reflex relationship lay within certain longitudinal zones and that there were ten of
these. By applying pressure to points along the zone lines he could create a reflex effect. He mapped out these zone areas and called the science 'Zone Therapy'. 

In the 1930s, Eunice Ingham further developed this theory. Her idea was that instead of accessing the organs in the zone sections through other reflexes on the body's surfaces, she would use the feet. She gradually mapped out the areas onto the feet - and the hands - and applied pressure to the points. Originally, she called the technique "Compression Massage" and then it became "Reflexology".

Over the years there have been many other developments e.g. Vertical Reflexology, Nerve Reflexology, Cranio-Sacral Reflexology, Chi Reflexology, Reflexology Lymph drainage to name just a few.

Reflexology and Research

Reflexology does not claim to be a 'cure-all' but many people have found they have been helped by it. Surveys carried out by the British Reflexology Association show that people who have experienced reflexology treatments would agree that the method is a very relaxing therapy which may reduce tension and lead to an improved sense of well-being.

Some positive research projects in reflexology have been carried out. This study was completed by Dr Carol Samuel at Portsmouth University: "This is the first time this widely used therapy has been scientifically tested as a treatment for acute pain, meaning it may be used to complement conventional drug therapy in the treatment of conditions associated with pain such as osteoarthritis, backache and cancers."
